Garry's Mod help!

I just got Gmod, so I have much to learn. My question for you is how to make characters such as zombies and antlions attack. I can't find a 'come to life' button anywhere!Garry's Mod help!

I'm searching all over the internet, but I can't find anything.
You need either garrys mod 9, or to buy garrys mod 10, they both have npc tabs which come up with a list of npcs to spawn. Npcs are the ''characters'' that are alive, and move.
Which maps have the NPC tabs? I mean, after clicking on 'Start Singleplayer Game', what should you click on next?
