Empire: Total War download

I just started downloding the demo, 30kbps yay!At this rate, I'll finish downloading it when my pre-order come though the door :p Anyone got it yet? It a system killer?Empire: Total War download
Got it. Took about 1 hour to d/l for me. Well, the load times are terrible! Hope they can fix that for the final release but 3 minute load time for battles is just painful.I still have to fiddle with ATI control panel because it tooks pretty poor. I set anti aliassing and AF to max in game, but I get really bad jaggies. Hopefully I can force it with the control. I've only played the tutorial so far, so I can't fully comment as they don't give you access to all unit commands. Seems kind of stripped down. I tried using the less than and greater than keys to rotate unit facings as I could with previous TW, but it doesn't work in Empire.Infantry in line seems bugged. Only the front rank fires when it should be the front two ranks. Basicalyl half you unit just sits there twiddling unless you draw the formation out into a line with only a single file. Recipe for disaster if cavalry is present. Infantry doesn't form into square when threatened with a cavalry charge. Should be automatic. Empire: Total War download

Glad to hear I'm not the only one suffering from long load times. It just hangs there... No HD activity, no nothing. Pretty sure it's a CPU thing, but it's ridiculous how long it takes, especially considering it runs surprisingly smooth once it actually starts up.

And I downloaded it in about 15 minutes... 1.5 mb/s. I bought a new router at CC yesterday for wireless, but my wired speeds improved by more than 3x. Pretty awesome.
I was able to get AA and AF working, but when I did, I got graphical corruption on buildings and rocks. As you can see in the screen, rocks, buildings, and abatis are all corrupted. It's much worse in game than in this still shot as every time I move the POV, the textures shimmer and sparkle with blue. Frame rates are really poor too. I have a fast machine, so there's no way the game should be running at 15fps. (Intel Quad core 9550 2.83Mhz, 8GB RAM, Ati 4870 card, Vista 64).
OK, had a chance to play around with it a bit more. It's not ready for release. Animations are buggy, sounds are missing (although that might have been done to cut down on the size of the demo), ship combat is porked, and the interface needs tweaking.Units sometimes get stuck in place and just run without moving. Faces on the cahracter models change as you scroll in and out. It's kind of funny to watch them suddenly grow moustaches, beards or muttonchops. Sails on ships are messed up. For some reason the animations show them billowing behind the masts, rather than in front. Ship levels get screwed up and half the time, the hull of a ship appears to be underwater. Horses that are killed while crossing a stream turn invisible below the waterline. The AI isn't as blatantly r-tarded as in Rome or Medieval II, but it's still dumb as a rock. I played through the Brandywine river scenario. I pulled my entire force of Brits to the ford at the far left end of the map, quickly routed the force of Rebel riflemen in the trees, crossed the ford and set my infantry through the woods in line, kept 3 units of Hessian mercenaries as reserve, threw my artillery out to the right and threw a line of skirmishers into the woods on the guns' right as a screen. The AI brought its infantry into line to face me, well out of musket range but still in range of the artillery, but kept its guns covering the main ford. I was able to reposition my 2 guns on my left flank and just hammer away with cannister, unit by unit until they all routed. Then I just charged their guns with my 4 units of cavalry and presto, heroic victory. I say hold off for a patch and a few mods. Ignore the hyperbolic drooling on sites like Gamespy which extol the ''merciless AI''. They're either getting paid off or they're congentially stupid. It's a cakewalk.
