Civ 4 works just fine on Vista. Fully compatible to my knowledge. I add that caveat because I have both expansions and do not run Civ 4 except throughthe most recent (Beyond the Sword). No Third party patches are needed. You should apply all the standard patches to get it up to the current version but I'm not sure any of those have anything to do with Vista compatibility.Where/What is telling you it is not compatible?Civilization IV not compatible on Windows Vista??
i installed it fine, but whenever i try to launch it, there's a popup saying that it isn't compatible with windows vista and that i should contact firaxis games. I click on run anyway, and when it gets to the initial loading screen it says that civilization iv has stopped working and needs to close....i cant even get to the menu screen to install patches. This is civ iv the original game, not the expansion packs
try the compatibility moderight click on the .exe file or the icon on your desktop- property- and select winxp
You can downloade the lates patch here:

Weird, I've never heard of that problem before. I have Vista myself and haven't had any problems getting it running (no need to do anything special to make it work). But I guess the problem is that you're using unpatched Civ IV, which I have never tried in Vista
i guess i can try reinstalling it, but what's the point of installing a patch if i can't even get to the startup menu?
Civ 4 and all expansions work for me in Vista, not sure what the problem is :(
What is the exact error message that you get?

You don't need to get to the menu screen to install the patch either. Once the patch is installed everything will work fine. Here is the link
I am having the same problem. I tried yesterday to download the demo and it just wouldn't work. Is this because it was a demo? I hate to buy the full game only to find it won't work with Vista and the stores won't take it back due to their ''no returns for any reason'' policies. I did the same thing with Oblivion and am stuck with a game I can never play because it doesn't work on vista. Frustrating!

I read an article today''...by the end of 2007 only 6.3% of 50,000 enterprise computer users it surveyed were working with Vista'' Learn from that, return your copy of vista today! http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic%26articleId=9076698
Solution...delete Vista, install XP. No more problems playing any games. I got rid of Vista after a week because of all the problems(that is a rediculous endevor if you upgraded from XP upgrade to a Vista upgrade. even the tech support in India was confused). Never had a problem with XP. Vista is this generations Windows Millenium. Remember how Millenium was prepackaged with all new computers then? Where is it now? Trash.

Worked fine on my vista, but like others, I installed both expansions before launch...
