I can't get into Baldur's Gate

So to me the driving force of an RPG is its story. There should be something very interesting to pull you in right away, just like a good book. However, I have attempted to play Baldur's Gate and there is no such hook. It starts off so slowly and there is no real progression of story for a long while and I usually lose interest. ''All the iron has gone rotten'' is the main quest of the game. Really, is this the best you could come up with? I couldn't care less why the iron has gone rotten.Has anyone else had the same experience? I can't be the only one... I can't get into Baldur's Gate
i think you're the first one i ever came across who complains about Baldur's Gate's lack of story. i mean, don't get me wrong, but there's probably a good reason why the franchise is widely regarded as genre defining.I can't get into Baldur's Gate
The main story is trying to figure out who is trying to kill you and why. The only real reason you're investigating the rotting iron is because you've been left alone in the world and the first people you meet who are willing to help you are already looking into the iron problem. If you want their help you have to help them first. However, I do understand what you're saying. I had the same problem with Morrowind. That was the single dullest game I've ever experienced. Everything about it was bland. I've never had an entertainment item leave me so completely bored the only thing I had the energy to do was complain how bored I was or take a nap.

Exactly....if ur not getting into the story...the game is not for you

I have played basically every single RPG that has come out since then....and none dont compare with the same quality...although a few come close (Torment, Grim Fandango etc)

I'm not complaining about a lack of story. I'm saying that there is nothing in the beginning to make me excited. One guy dies before you get a chance to care about him and the direction the game takes in the beginning is kind of bland. I have not gotten far enough to explore the rest of the story.

I have tried some of the side quests but they don't have anything to do with the main quest and are kind of shallow.
Its because the game is out of its time zone, in its time many PC gamers loved it.

I had it back then but I didn't like it because I couldn't uderstand it, so I gave it back...and I decided to buy it again 2008 and well the game really is dull and boring and the level up system is crap...there are far better games now.

The game that replaced Baldurs gate is called Neverwinter Nights (NWN) series with expansions, I prefered NWN1 but thats quite old now, and I like NWN 2 with expansions, but its a little annoying compared to the first one but its alright, you might like that better...Its a lot better then Baldurs Gate in my opinion.

If your intrested watch some trailers of NWN2 and expansions, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir...my advice if your gonna buy it, buy the gold edition with the expansions on it.
you really cant expect an 11 year old game to blow you away from the moment you start it up. It does get good though and its still worth a playthrough if you missed playing back in the day.
I would also like to add that progressing through the game is a chore. I constantly feel underpowered so I try doing side quests to level up. Leveling up takes a long time and is not very rewarding. Also, the random encounters get annoying really fast.

I'm just wondering if there is a mindset I should adopt before playing it. I never really got into DnD so I'm not familiar with the logic behind this game.

You have a point but I don't think this applies to me. I recently beat Fallout and it is just as old as Baldur's Gate. I loved that game, even 11 years after it was released. BG is a different story however...

theres no lvl grinding in a dnd rpg, you're never going to feel like the almighty destroyer killing people in 1 hit like in jpn rpgs. combat is about strategy not levels. always pause the combat to issue commands and keep your clothies in the back at all time.
I love Fallout as well and I still love it but I don't like Baldur's Gate, I still have Fallout 2 and love it but I have completed it so many times I don't bother with it anymore, last time I played Fallout 2 was last year around June 2008 and I still liked it, I even still gett killed a couple of times...Lol shot to pieces more like.

Honestly I had friends that liked the Baldurs gate series but when I played it, at first I was excited to be playing it again but as soon as the first bit of the game was complete and I was outside, I followed the story a bit and I just lost all interest and god I really hate the level up system in Baldurs Gate its so boring, to me it feels more like a hack n slash then an RPG, I would have brought Diablo 2 if I knew it was going to be like that.
That's okay, you don't need to like every good game.

While it is true that games are different now.... you can easily pick up BG and still love it and admire what a great game it is. As for the poster....keep going, when u reach Baldurs Gate 2 u will embrace this masterpiece...

If you want story then you're playing the wrong game. Go play Planescape: Torment.

Lol :D

I don't like MMOs and FPS. :P I can't tolerate them. But I can't complain about them.

I was a young teenager (13-14 I think or even younger perhaps) when I played BG 1 and was by no means an expert-gamer, but getting into the story was easy for me. After all, I played pen %26 paper D%26D. The thing that stopped me from playing was how difficult I found the game at the time. I kept dying and losing money just to resurrect fallen comrades and the extreme hemorrhage to my virtual wallet ''killed'' me. In hindsight, I will admit I wasn't quite used to that type of game and my strategy skills were quite rough and noobish. I'm sure I'd do better if I played it again now. I must mention that I fared better when, a year or two later, I tried Icewind Dale and fared better and got farther into the game and story, but a computer crash ended my adventure abruptly. This time, my rough computer maintenance skills were to blame. Oh well.....
